Can Sheikh Hasina be extradited?

Bangladesh's chief prosecutor, Mohammad Tajul Islam, plans to seek the extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from India. Hasina fled to India in August following a mass uprising and is facing multiple criminal charges in Bangladesh, including murder and crimes against humanity. India and Bangladesh have a bilateral extradition treaty, amended in 2016, which facilitates the extradition process but can refuse if the charges are deemed political or lack good faith. Despite this, the treaty’s recent amendments simplify the process, and the substantial charges against Hasina make her eligible for extradition. The final decision on her extradition will likely depend on diplomatic and political negotiations.
